Spirited Bidding Lands Son of Good Magic for $270,000
Highlights from Day 1 of the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Winter Mixed Sale.
Uptowncharlybrown Stud's Good Magic colt (Hip 141) grabbed attention Feb. 5 during the first day of the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Winter Mixed Sale, driving the bidding up to $270,000 with Marshall Taylor, signing as Castleton Way/Hard Five, victorious in the end.
"He's a beautiful colt, big, and has a lot of stretch and size to him for his sire, and has a nice walk on him," Taylor said. "We're excited to have him and plan on bringing him back (to the sales) this summer."
The bay colt consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency is out of the unraced Malibu Moon daughter Moonlight Serenade, making him a half sibling to the Victory Ride Stakes (G3) victress Dixie Serenade (Uptowncharlybrown ). The mare has a 2-year-old filly named Not The First Time (Not This Time ). Moonlight Serenade, who has produced three winners from four runners, is a half sister to stakes winner Sir Lancelot (Goldencents ) and stakes-placed winner Zig Zag (Iron Deputy).
The Pennsylvania-bred colt was the first yearling during Monday's session to sell for more than $200,000.
"I was hoping he would be less. I wanted to get him a little lower, but Good Magic is doing well with a couple of horses on the Derby Trail and a Derby winner already," Taylor explained. "I love that he's a colt, and we have a little information on the 2-year-old; she's training well, so it gave me a little confidence that we might have an update there.
"I feel we've had to reach a bit more this year than in the past. November was tough, and it carried over into January and February. This colt was my last order to fill."
